I confess. My motivation for writing this post is a bit selfish. It’s part of my research. My husband’s birthday is 10 days away and my budget is tight. He’s a simple man who doesn’t want or ask for much (Thank goodness one of us is!). Case in point, just this morning, while dressing for church, my daughter said to him, “Dad! That’s the same shirt you wore to your wedding rehearsal! I saw it in the photo album last night!” Busted. And yes, that was almost 11 years ago.
But this year, besides buying him a new button-down for Sunday mornings, I plan to finally deal with one of the things he’s been asking me to do for quite a few years. It’s time to update, and add to, our family’s portraits.
I’m not talking about photographic portraits. The kind I really love are silhouettes. The ones I did years ago sit at the top of our steps and are so outdated that my daughter, who was six months old when I originally did them, walks by and says, “Who’s that boy in that picture frame?” She’s four now, and has hair. And there’s even one more babe in our family to make room for on the wall. We are well overdue for an update.
So in preparation for my week of crafting ahead, here is some silhouette inspiration catching my eye:
*Step-by-step instructions to create silhouettes digitally, with amazing detail from craftastica.
*Simple steps to create traditional silhouettes cut from paper on modern day moms.
*Beautiful family portraits on fabric (don’t forget the family pet!) from habit of art.
*Don’t want to do it yourself? Le Papier Studio creates a custom family portrait, even these unique full-body silhouettes from a favorite photograph.
How does your family mark the passing of time as your family grows and changes? Do you create silhouettes? Yearly hand-prints? Do you have a portrait taken each year? Or are you like me–outdated and behind in this department?

My husband makes silhouettes for me every year on my birthday. It is fun to look back and see how the children’s profiles have changed over time.
Oh my goodness! What an amazing gift, and good husband!
We’re fortunate to have a friend who is a fab photographer so she does our photos every year. But buying prints and framing can get pricey. I love this idea — and they make awesome Grandparents gifts too. -Kristen
I LOVE this! My husband is the same way and this idea is perfect!!! I’m all over this project.
Oh wow! I so love this idea and am stealing it for my own!
Thus far, we have taken a family picture each time our daughters were born. I love to have pictures taken of us on events too. Easter, hayride, zoo, you get the picture. These silhouettes are so different and classy. I think I might give them a try!
Other than the school pictures for our older 3 all of our frames are horribly outdated. The last portrait we had done of our 5yo was when she was 16 months. The last family portrait we did was when she was 20 months. We have no framed photos of the baby up anywhere in the house.
My husband told me a couple weeks ago he wants to go get our pictures done. It’s been so long since we had the time and money but he says he was looking at the last ones we did and realized he only ever did one when he was a kid and wants our kids to have more than that (we did them yearly from 2002-2007). I keep meaning to update all the smaller frames but I never have the money to print photos and I’m always running low on printer ink it seems.
I’m hoping we’ll go back to our once a year family portraits and the “sister pictures”. And now the “brother pictures”.
And I remember my mom doing silhouette portraits of me and my brother as a kid. She did them them in fabric and stitched our names on them. I might have to do that with the kids.
I love silhouettes. I don’t have any, of any of us, but I love them nonetheless.
Our last set of family pictures was taken before our most recent baby was born (he, um, just turned one). Might be time to schedule another session!
What a great idea, these will look wonderful on little pillows!
